MEMBER INSIGHTS
THE EVENT RENTAL INDUSTRY 2020 AND BEYOND
We asked a few of our member rental companies what trends they are forecasting for 2020 and what the future holds for the event rental industry. Robin Legere from Party Rental Ltd. said that color has finally made a comeback (yay!) and color schemes have become a suggestion instead of a requirement for a well-designed event. “It’s all about what patterns and tones look at home in the space, and what feels purposeful and speaks to you. It’s all about comfort – Soft, rich linen, heavy flatware and substantial furniture. Intimate tables with less guests and more elbow room, paired with comfortable chairs, maybe with a lumbar pillow for added comfort.”
Highly customized place settings became hot in 2019 and will continue to grow in 2020. It’s all about selecting the perfect pieces to complement the creative courses caterers dream up. Maybe more appropriate glassware for paired wines, or many small courses plated in a selection of curated small vessels.
Marcie Falconero from XO The Girls stated that trends for 2020 continue to include velvet, textured prints (floral, geometric, etc) and metallic details. “Don’t be afraid to mix design elements throughout different spaces of your event.”
So what’s the future for the rental industry? According to Robin, “Online ordering is the future! PRL recently launched a new website with full service online ordering capabilities. This is the first step of many to streamline the ordering process, and to provide our clients with the most state-of-the-art rental technology in the industry." Marcie added, “We think many event rental companies will offer full service design. It will become a one-stop shop to get everything needed to create and make an event fabulous. However, it will be more digital appointments and online order placing.”
So what are some tips for working with rental companies? Robin suggested separating your rental orders into drop zones to make it easier for your team to check the equipment in and set up separate locations (For example, Ceremony, Cocktail Hour, Reception, Bar, Back of House, etc.). Marcie suggests booking your items in advance! If you’re in love with something, book it. We agree!

TIPS AND TRENDS FROM WEDDING PLANNERS
It’s almost spring and we know many couples are well into their wedding planning! We reached out to our NE NACE expert wedding planners and asked them to provide their top tips and trends to help you through the rest of the planning process.
So what are some trends the experts are seeing in wedding planning?
According to Jaclyn Watson Events, there is a lot of buzz around bridal fashion. Long sleeves and capes for bridal gowns are growing in prominence along with patterned scarves, higher waisted bottoms, and pantsuits, a flashback to the retro look! These trends are also influencing design, i.e., more use of color, grazing tables vs passed food and feathers!
Couples are focusing more on the guest experience, making sure their event is “thoughtful” according to owner and principal event producer, Tasha Bracken of SD Events. If it looks like rain, it’s important we are prepared and have umbrellas on hand. While your design may include white hemstitch napkins, you always want several black napkins to accommodate guest’s request and always make sure staff readily has access to stain removers and Advil or Tylenol. It takes time and commitment but writing a personal note to each of your guests or giving them a photo of the two of you will touch them and be remembered forever.
Luba Mitnik-Gankin, owner of Primavera Dreams, is seeing the influence on social media, specifically Instagram and Pinterest in the events her company is planning. Couples are exposed to so many options from all over the world and while it may not be something local to where they are getting married, they still consider having it at their event – especially if it adds a unique element.
So what are some top tips for navigating the trends and the planning process? We got some insight from the wedding gurus at EFD Creative.
1.) There is that old saying…you don’t know what you don’t know, and having a sound system (microphone & speakers) for your ceremony is critical. Remember if it's important for all the guests (including the back row) to hear the ceremony.
2.) Prepare for the elements!!!! The comfort of your guests is always important, if they are hot, cold or bothered by bugs, they will remember that!
And a favorite general tip from Tasha Bracken:
No matter what trends you decide to incorporate, they should be authentic to who you are as a couple. And remember, it’s important to enjoy the planning process as much as it is the wedding day. This will ensure you are smiling on your wedding day!
